What a surprise finding this UNESCO listed site, almost in the middle of nowhere, on our travels to the Eastern Province. Located in the middle of the largest oasis in the world, is Al Qara mountain, where lies a network of caves and underground rooms. The high, cool walls enable the limestone caves to regulate their temperature keeping them cool in summer and warm in winter. As such they were favoured by the Saudi King in the 1940’s as meeting rooms, due to the natural light and regulated temperature inside.
